Enhance your natural radiance
Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process however are most prominent on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, neck, hands and forearms. The skin between your eyebrows, around the eyes, and on your forehead is laid over muscle and these muscles are moving all the time when you smile, frown and grimace. Over time it is this repeated facial activity that causes skin to crease eventually forming the lines and wrinkles. Wrinkles caused by muscle contractions such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows’ feet can be improved to appear smoother and reduced in appearance through the use of botulinum toxin injections.
Botulinum toxin injections
Botulinum toxin injections are used to temporarily relax the muscles in your face to smooth out lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and frown lines. These injections can also be used to treat medical conditions including migraines, hyperhidrosis, overactive bladder and eye problems.
Healthcare providers inject small amounts of botulinum toxins into specific muscles. You’ll need to repeat treatments in three to six months after the effects wear off.
How are botulinum toxin injections administered and when will I see any results?
A healthcare provider will use a very fine needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxins into the treatment area. Depending on where the treatment area is you may receive several injections in different spots. Treatments will take place as an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to go home the same day. The injections may feel uncomfortable; however the procedure is done quickly. The treatment usually takes effect 24-72 hours after the injection, with maximum effect at about 1 to 2 weeks. The treatment will generally last for approximately 3-6 months, and will vary per individual.
Dermal fillers
Dermal refers to skin and so ‘dermal fillers’ are an injection therapy used to contour, expand, soften and enhance facial features. They are commonly used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles. Injectable fillers can be temporary, permanent or semi-permanent.
Although they are referred to as dermal, some injections are not always injected into the skin, they can be placed down deeper into the layers of tissue, some may also inject deeply down onto the bone. Medically these injections are called ‘Soft Tissue Expanders’ and Hyaluronic Acid ( HA ). Hyaluronic Acid is the most common filler used today, both will provide a temporary effect, lasting from six to eighteen months.
How do dermal fillers work?
Temporary dermal fillers contain a sugary gel substance called Hyaluronic Acid. When it is injected it expands the soft tissue and naturally integrates into the skin and the deeper underlying tissues, whilst also attracting moisture into the tissues. These actions add volume, lifting the skin, which temporarily reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. They can be injected almost anywhere in the body, and will help to plump the tissues up and out, whilst sculpting and contouring the treated area.
Hyaluronic Acid are commonly injected into the lips to give them a fuller and more plumper appearance, however can be used almost anywhere in the body for example they could be used to alter the shape of a nose, jaw or chin. Fillers can also be used to improve the appearance of defects such as acne scars as they enhance and rejuvenate any area that is injected.
How are dermal fillers administered and when will I see any results?
An anaesthetic cream may be used on the treatment area to first numb your skin. The injection will then be injected into the treatment area, which will then be messaged. It is likely to feel uncomfortable but should not be painful. The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the area being treated. Although individual results will vary, majority of patients will notice results within two weeks after receiving their injections.
You may find the treated area a little red, sore and swollen after treatment, any swelling should go down in a few days. It is advised that you don’t wear make up immediately after the treatment, and should avoid alcohol, coffee and sun exposure. You will be advised further about what to do to help reduce an side effects in your consultation prior to treatment.
Dermal fillers will eventually dissolve from the body, they usually last from between six to eighteen months depending on treatment. This will be discussed in more detail at your consultation prior to treatment.
There are also permanent and semi-permanent fillers available, however permanent fillers should only be given under medical supervision as once injected they cannot be altered or changed.
